Adele Gutman Nathan, a director and producer of small
theater companies in New York and Baltimore, traveled to Provincetown,
Massachusetts, home of the Provincetown Players, in order to find new
plays for her companies to perform. She met members of the newly formed
company, including then-unknown playwright Eugene ONeill. She
produced early stagings of ONeills Bound East for Cardiff
and Anna Christie. After years in the Little Theater movement,
Adele Nathan became a leading producer of grand theatrical pageants
celebrating historical events. After her first successful pageant marking
the 100th anniversary of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, she was
invited to plan celebrations across the country.
